Title: Toward A Global Vision For The Global Clinical Movement

Lead Presenter: Frank Bloch

Co-Presenters:

  1. Mariana Berbec

Session Abstract: This presentation is intended to open up the question of the role that GAJE and other international clinical organizations have in the “global clinical movement” and what influence they can have in charting the direction of clinical legal education worldwide. Since its inception, GAJE has identified itself as a worldwide alliance committed to seeking justice through legal education, and though its worldwide meetings and increasing visibility the organization has certainly influenced the development of “justice education” around the world. But how can GAJE and other international clinical organization best advance the global clinical movement? The presenters will begin with a brief review of the major components of the global clinical movement and their most significant contributions to the development and implementation of justice education around the world. These will include, in addition to GAJE, the International Journal of Clinical Legal Education (IJCLE), the leading regional clinical organizations, and certain organizations that have been responsible for funding clinical programs in different parts of the world. They will then offer two separate and perhaps competing global visions of the global clinical movement, with one seeking to move toward a common global perspective and the other focused on filling out justice education’s global reach. The remainder of the time will be left for discussion among the participants.
