Title: Look, No Clinic! Justice Education In The Mainstream Curriculum

Session Abstract: This conference is about education for justice. Much attention is paid, understandably, to clinical method as a very effective means of engaging the hearts and minds of students who aspire to use their legal skills for justice. But most of us teach in environments with limited resources, and clinical method is an exception not the rule. Education for justice cannot happen only on the clinical margins of the legal curriculum; our challenge is to imbue the 'ordinary' teaching of legal doctrine with dimensions of justice, to make all our legal teaching an exercise in education for justice. This requires critical and reflective perspectives on doctrinal content, and a similarly critical and reflective approach to teaching. In this session we will examine these propositions, and practice some methods for embedding justice education in the conventional curriculum.
