Title: Law Students Assist Defendants And Reduce Breaches Of Domestic Violence Orders

Lead Presenter: Bronwyn Ambrogetti

Session Abstract: A legal clinic in a regional town in Australia provided information and advice to unrepresented parties in applications for apprehended violence orders. The clinic was run by law students and graduates undertaking their practical legal training at a regional community legal centre under the supervision of solicitors from the legal centre. The clinic operated at the local court weekly on the day the applications for apprehended violence orders(AVO) were listed for hearing by the Magistrate. The students prepared and presented an information session to unrepresented parties in AVO matters at the court house. Following the information session unrepresented parties were able to obtain advice about their matter from a solicitor from the legal centre. On evaluation of the clinic after 12 months there was a reduction in breach AVO offences as well as high satisfaction with the clinic from defendants, Magistrate, students and other stakeholders.
