Title: The Embedded Clinic - Police Accountability Clinic at Flemington and Kensington CLC
Lead Presenter: María Elena Menéndez Ibáñez
Session Abstract: The Police Accountability Clinic is a partnership between Melbourne Law School and Flemington & Kensington CLC. The Clinic provides direct support and assistance to clients with complaints against police, and was modelled to integrate with the Centre's work over many years challenging police misconduct and campaigning for an independent and human rights compliant police accountabilty regime. We will discuss the design and work of the clinic and share some of the lessons learned as the clinic has matured. We will also discuss challenges that students experience working in this area and suggest that these challenges, in the context of the clinic's structure, can contribute to a deeper understanding of practising public interest law.
