Short Bio: Prof. Doug Colbert teaches the Access to Justice Clinic, Professional Responsibility, Race & Criminal Justice, and Human Rights Law. He directs the national Gideon Initiative for Representation at Pretrial, focusing on guaranteeing indigent defendants effective representation at first appearances through partnership between law clinics and public defenders. His articles on access to justice, indigent defendants’ right to counsel, lawyers’ pro bono responsibility, race and jury selection, the 13th Amendment and human rights law have appeared in the Stanford, Cornell, Harvard Civil Rights, Georgetown Law & Poverty, Illinois, Hastings and Buffalo Law Journals. Since 2006, Prof. Colbert has accompanied law students to New Orleans to assist victims of the destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina, and recently to victims of Hurricane Sandy in the NYC area. In 2008, he and his students received the Martin Luther King Maryland Diversity Award. He has received many student awards for teaching.
