Title of Presentation : Postgraduate Clinical Legal Education: A Cooperative Model

Short Abstract : The College of Law, Australia has been providing practical legal training (PLT) to law graduates in NSW since 1974 and now also offers courses leading to admission in Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia and New Zealand. This paper will describe how the College of Law provides PLT in cooperation with a number major law firms. The components of the program will be described including the opportunities to undertake pro bono work. The program uses both face to face and e-learning strategies to deliver the program and these will be explained. The way in which the components of the program are integrated to provide the necessary skills, knowledge, ethics and professionalism, required by a newly admitted lawyer will be discussed. Evaluation and assessment strategies will also be described. Finally the paper will discuss the opportunities and challenges provided by this cooperative model.
